The visual mechanisms of Tenebrio molitor: some aspects of the spectral response.

چکیده
Granaries and food storage depots provide an essentially dark environment offering only occasional low-level illumination which is rarely intense enough to make spectral discrimination possible. Nevertheless insects adapted to such environments have been found to display phototactic responses (Balfour & Carmichael, 1928; Rahman & Sohi, 1939; Perttunen& Lahermaa, 1963; Yinon& Shulov, 1966; Sohi, 1966; Soderstrom, 1968). The low-light habitat of 'stored product' and 'granary' insects seemed to provide an environment which would demand a less well-developed spectrally sensitive visual mechanism than that found for example in field insects. The yellow mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor was chosen as a suitable 'stored product' insect to test the above hypothesis. The spectral response of 'stored product' and 'granary' insects has been examined behaviourally by Stermer (1959), Sohi (1966) and Yinon & Shulov (1966). In that these insects display a negative phototactic response there seem to be inherent difficulties in quantifying behaviour. Further, owing to the influence of extraneous social factors the behavioural criteria themselves appear to be somewhat equivocal. To circumvent these problems the response of the mediating sense organ (the compound eye) was directly investigated by means of electrophysiological recordings of the insect electroretinogram (ERG).

Effects of dietary replacement of fishmeal by yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae meal on growth performance, hematological indices and some of non-specific immune responses of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
8-week feeding trial was conducted for juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to determine the optimal amount of Tenebrio molitor meal (TM) that could replace fishmeal in feeds without reducing growth performance, hematological indices and non-specific immune responses. Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated with TM replacing 0% (Control), 25% (TM25), 50% (TM50), 75% (TM...
متن کاملThe visual mechanisms of Tenebrio molitor: changes in the electroretinogram as function of the stimulus duration.
The yellow mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor represents a group of insects living almost constantly under conditions of darkness. Some evolutionary changes presumably occurred in the visual mechanism of this species during or after the adoption of its specific habitat. Various aspects of its visual mechanism have already been investigated (Yinon, I969, I97oa; Yinon and Auerbach, I969). In the pr...
متن کاملIsolation of juvenile hormone esterase and its partial cDNA clone from the beetle, Tenebrio molitor.
Juvenile hormone esterase (JHE) plays an essential role in insect development. It is partially responsible for the clearance of juvenile hormone (JH) which regulates various aspects of insect development and reproduction. Because of its role in regulating JH titer, this enzyme has been targeted for development of biologically-based insecticides. JHE was partially purified from the beetle, Teneb...
متن کاملExamining costs of induced and constitutive immune investment in Tenebrio molitor.
Central to the conceptual basis of ecological immunity is the notion that immune effector systems are costly to produce, run, and/or maintain. Using the mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor, as a model we investigated two aspects of the costs of innate immunity. We conducted an experiment designed to identify the cost of an induced immune response, and the cost of constitutive investment in immuni...
متن کاملTranscriptomic Immune Response of Tenebrio molitor Pupae to Parasitization by Scleroderma guani
BACKGROUND Host and parasitoid interaction is one of the most fascinating relationships of insects, which is currently receiving an increasing interest. Understanding the mechanisms evolved by the parasitoids to evade or suppress the host immune system is important for dissecting this interaction, while it was still poorly known. In order to gain insight into the immune response of Tenebrio mol...
